Alcoholism among children

Introduction

After a long and tiresome shift one can go to a pub and have a couple of drinks. What can be wrong with that? The thing is that adults often forget that children are watching closely and form their own opinion about the world judging by the behaviour of grown-ups. In the 21 century children start drinking alcohol at a very young age and the problem is becoming bigger.

Process
Surf the net and answer the following questions:

1) Drinking alcohol
What are the most and the least drinking countries?
What is "Legal drinking age"? When are people allowed to drink alcohol in Russia? In the USA? In UK?
How widespread is underage drinking?

2) Alcoholism
What is alcoholism? What are the signs of it?
What tests are there that can help to recognise drinking problems?

3) Underage Drinking
What are the main characteristics of underage drinking?
Point out main statistic results about where youth get alcohol and where youth drink it.
What are the main reasons for children to drink alcohol\ to start drinking alcohol?
Do you think that parent's influence has an effective result? Why? Why not? Answer according to statistics.

Watch the video? What does it say to the society? What is your attitude to it?

What are the main consequences of underage drinking? Classify them (health, family, academic consequences and so on).

4)Prevention
Why You Should Talk With Your Child About Alcohol
Should parents forbid children akcohol or it should be like advise?
When should you start talking to a child about alcohol?

What You Can Do To Prevent Your Child From Drinking
Why do you think getting a driver’s license may increase the risk of a child’s alcohol use?
Why being involved in children’s lives and encouragment children’s growing independence should prevent him or her from drinking?

Project
Make your own community and family studies research project based on the information above and on the examples below. Make a presentation about the results of the survey. In your presentation include the general information about underage drinking.

"They may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel." - Carl W. Buechner
Can people live in Peace? Someone could say: Yes, we can! But it is so difficult because there are a lot of conflicts in our world. Conflict is a natural thing in our life, but is it natural for a school and should it be in a school? And what to do if you have such a situation? We’d like to discuss this topic.
1.      Conflicts between classmates.
·        Do you agree with the author’s point of view that a conflict should be solved with the help of a teacher?
·        How do you think is it necessary to tell your opponent about your feelings?

2.      Conflicts between pupils and a teacher.
·        What can be the reasons for a conflict?
·        How should a teacher and pupils behave in a conflict situation?

3.      Solution
·        How does the author advice to behave in conflict situation?
·        What aspects described by the author did you use in your life?

4.      Conclusion
You have had the opportunity to explore some important aspects of conflicts in a school: conflicts between classmates, conflicts between pupils and a teacher, solution of conflicts.  We think conflicts may have place in a school as far as it’s a place where are a lot of people at the same time and their interests may clash. The main thing is try to behave in a correct way and try to solve it. People should be polite in any case to each other, to respect each other.
What do you think about this topic?
What do you usually do when you have a conflict situation?

What are the differences between the given advise and your usual behavior?

Would you send your child to Hogwarts?

Well, with the premiere of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, thisseems a topical question. It's alsoone which I'm guessing many Harry Potter readers will have asked themselves over the years.Your kids may love the idea of going (all that excitement, albeit with perhaps rather too much death and destruction), but I'm not convinced I'd send my children to Hogwarts (that's if they turned out to be talented muggles). Not only is it too dangerous, but what on earth would they learn there?!

In this essay by Steve Vander Ark, the consensus seems very much to be no, don't educate your children with Harry and co.After all, as he writes, the children really don't learn much, and the teachers do not treat their students well. He's right, isn't he? I don't recall much maths, foreign languages (although, of course they're no longer compulsory at secondary school in the real worldeither) or PHSE. Surely Hermione would love to read some English literature, whether a little bit of Forster (I think this would tickle her fancy) or something more challenging (the metaphysical poets?). Instead she's stuck with potion making, fighting off evil and learning magic. Hermione, Harry and friends also come up against so many truly terrible teachers (would Dolores Umbridge or Severus Snape be licensed to teach?)

English teacher and blogger extraordinaire Dana Huff has written a very detailed post on this very subject. In it she discusses the merits (or otherwise) of the main Hogwarts teachers, from Snape and McGonagall to Hagrid and Sybill Trelawney. Not many, other than Lupin (who makes the top fivein my list of the most inspring teachers in films), and of course, Professor Dumbledore, are very inspiring. Mind you, Ms Huff is perhaps not as much of a fan of Dumbledore as others might be.She writes:
"We are never given an assessment of Dumbledore’s teaching skills, but based on his relationship with the students, he was probably fairly good. I do wonder at his skill in selecting some of his staff, but he seems, in all, to be a fairly good administrator. He is not always as supportive of his faculty as he could be, but often that’s because the faculty member in question is being unreasonable (Snape, most of the time)."

What do you think? Is Hogwarts an appealing educational establishment? Maybe I'd have a different view if I was currently at school, but for the moment at least, I'm glad that my daughter is learning to spell (beautifully and noisily are on her latest list) rather than learn spells....

  Glühwein  Treasure Hunt

Glühwein: The Warmth of Christmas

Glühwein (Glow wine in German) is a hot, spiced wine also known as mulled wine. Other Languages refer to it as Glög, Glintvein or Spiced Wine. It is a tasty drink that warms up the body in cold weather and is a popular treat at parties. In essence, the drink consists of wine and spices heated to just below boiling point before drinking.
Nowadays, Glühwein is a very famous hot drink in Germany during the 4 to 5 weeks before Christmas. It is served on all the Christmas Markets you can find in all cities. But you can also buy it cold in bottles in a supermarket or make some yourself. Last year, about 50 million litres had been consumed in Germany alone!
One of the most known mulled wines which is served in Scandinavian countries is the glogg. Even though you can find pre-made gloggs, many people prefer to prepare it themselves. You can find various recipes on how to prepare mulled wine.

The History of Glühwein

The roots of the Glühwein are not to be found in a dark kitchen of a medieval monastery or besides a camp fire of the ancient Germans. No, it was invented in ancient Rome. Roman citizen Marcus Gavius Apicius published the first recipe in his book “De re coquinaria – About Cooking” where he mentioned the “Conditum Paradoxum” for the first time.
During the Middle Ages, cold spiced wines were popular, e.g. Clairet or Hippocras. The ingredients were already similar to today’s Glühwein.
One of the first signs of fall in Germany are the open air market stalls serving hot spiced wine. Glühwein is popular at a Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market). The markets open in mid-December and sell ornaments, adventcalendars, springerle molds and other Christmas items. Every city and town has a Weinachtsmarkt; the Stuttgart Markt is open every evening, but a smaller city like Nürtingen has a Markt only on weekends and long Thursdays.

Here are some recipes how to cook Glühwine:

There's nothing better then a hot cop of spiced wine on a cold autumn day! It's especially lovely to drink outside at a market or as you're strolling through the forest (often little huts are set up in the forest selling Glühwein). In Germany it's easy to find ready-made mixes that you can just sprinkle into a pot of wine and then heat up on the stove, but making your own has an awesome pay off!
